Lashing chain is used to immobilize cargo while the vessel is underway.
Such chains are commonly used on ferries and roll on-roll off vessels to secure vehicular cargo. They also can be used on various types of freighter to secure baled or palletized cargo.
A lashing chain has a hook at each end. One end is attached to the cargo, the other to a deck fitting, usually an elephant foot hook.
Choice will depend on chain length and diameter, hook design and size, and the types of cargo suitable for chain lashing.
- Prevents cargo shifting
- Requires manual installation
