Jam cleats for sailboats include all fittings used to hold lines under tension aboard such craft.
These devices are used with sheets, downhaul blocks, halyards, reef lines and all other lines which must be held under load.
Several tensioning systems are used, whether the cleat is metal or a small plastic device.
- Clam cleats, with or without a line guide, hold lines in a notched groove. The line's diameter must be slightly larger than that of the groove. They are used for light loads on lines of small diameter. Some are articulated for quick release. Accidental release is possible.
- Cam cleats pinch lines between two notched, spring-loaded jaws, and are suitable for moderate loads. They can be used to hold lines exiting blocks, or on rotating towers for mainsail sheets. They are unfortunately not entirely foolproof. An awkward gesture can release the line.
- Line clutches are more complex. The line passes through a tubular guide, and a lever activates a notched clamp that holds the line fast. They are extremely reliable, and are used to hold medium- to large-diameter lines under considerable load.
Choice will depend on the load on the line and the required degree of reliability. Line diameter is another important factor.
