Jam cleats are rigging units allowing to hold fast a taut line. The jamming system can consist in spring-mounted jaws or in a toothed groove.
Jam cleats allow to arrest taut lines bearing medium-intensity stress.
They can be used with spinnaker pole downhauls, to adjust travellers, etc.
There are two types of jam cleats: cam cleats and clam cleats. The former jam the lines with toothed jaws mounted on springs. The line is freed if lifted upwards.
Clam cleats feature a toothed groove. Its diameter is slightly inferior to that of the line, which can therefore be jammed within. It can also be freed with an upwards motion.
Cleats can be plastic, aluminum or stainless steel.
Cam cleats can be installed upon rotary towers (e.g. for a mainsail sheet), therefore allowing to pull the line from any side of the boat. Fairleads allow to keep the line end in front of the cleat at all times.
Grooves are better suited to lines bearing low-intensity stresses. Larger ropes should be jammed with cam cleats. Lines bearing high-intensity stresses can be arrested with line clutches.
Specify the line's diameter.
- Easy to install and to use
- Can only bear medium-intensity stresses
