The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
An inflatable liferaft constitutes safety equipment designed to shelter shipwreck victims forced to abandon a vessel at sea. Square, hexagonal or another shape, it sometimes has a protective tent.
The liferafts presented in this section of NauticExpo are intended primarily for use aboard merchant and passenger ships. Those for leisure craft are referred to as boat liferafts.
Such rafts can be designed for blue-water or inshore use. Unlike coastal versions, high-seas models are equipped with food, water, fish hooks, distress flares and other survival gear. They are usually stowed in buoyant cylindrical or rectangular canisters.
When released overboard, they inflate automatically via a compressed air cylinder as the trip line is pulled taught. Some models must be launched from davits. Capacity varies from model to model, ranging from four to several hundred passengers. Most are self-righting thanks to an integrated ballast system. Such liferafts must undergo periodically inspection, depending on applicable regulations.
Liferafts are often certified for use aboard a specific type of vessel. The required number of liferafts, their type, size and capacity will depend on the vessel's flag of registration and zone of activity.
