An inboard motorboat has its motor in the hull. Its propulsive unit is a sterndrive, a surface drive (for high performance) or a drive shaft and propeller.
Very small craft are rarely equipped with inboard motors because of limited space and the complexity of installing the drive unit. In boats above a certain size, inboards occupy space but allow for cleaner hull lines and the installation of seats or sundecks. An inboard/sterndrive combination allows for trailering, as with an outboard.
