Hovercrafts

Need help
choosing?

The hovercraft rides on an air cushion and is propelled by a turbine-driven propeller. It does not fly, but is supported on the airflow passing beneath its rubber skirt.

Applications

Recreational hovercraft can carry a few people, while commercial models are designed for passenger transport. Its amphibious operation gives it military capabilities.

Technologies

A blower maintains lift by creating an air cushion which passes beneath a flexible rubber skirt whose shape varies with the terrain. Forward movement is generated by motor-driven propellers.

How to choose

Choice will depend on intended use. There are very large hovercraft for commercial use, as passenger ferries, for example. However, there are also smaller models for private use.

Advantages

- Can travel over land, water and ice
- Minimal draft
- High speed
- No need for port infrastructure in nautical use
- Can be used in rough seas

Disadvantages

- Unable to negotiate large obstacles
- Requires powerful motors for propulsion and support
