The portable VHF radio is an easy-to-use, portable radio communication device resembling a walkie-talkie. NauticExpo offers a broad range of portable VHF radios.
The portable VHF radio is used for communications between two units on the same channel (predetermined frequency).
Very high frequency (VHF) radios operate between 30 and 300 MHz. The spectrum is divided into various channels (predetermined transmission/reception frequencies). Channel 70 is reserved for digital selective calling (DSC), while channel 16 is used for initial contact, distress and security calls. VHF radios are limited to line-of-site communications to the horizon because the emitted waves travel in a straight line. Thus, range increases with height of the unit. Effective range varies between five and 10 miles.
Choice criteria include battery life, size of controls (operator may wear gloves) and weatherproof qualities.
