The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A hand-held radio is a portable communication device. The great variety of models includes VHF, UHF, VHF-UHF and waterproof hand-held VHF marine radios.
These radios are capable of communications over long distances. They also are frequently used for on-board communications between crew members.
Such radios resemble walkie-talkies and usually operate in half-duplex mode. Transmitting requires pressing a button, during which time it is not possible to receive.
Consider the radio's planned use. UHF signals penetrate hull structures better than others and are widely used for communication between crew members on merchant ships. VHF models are common aboard small recreational craft for communication with other vessels and shore stations.
