The Al Messilah was once a car carrier. By request of the Kuwaiti shipping company Livestock Transport and Trading Company (KLTT), Meyer Werft converted the ship into a livestock carrier. This project already was the 26th conversion of this type, making Meyer Werft the absolute no. 1 in Europe in this sector.
Still this project was special because in this case it was tested how well international cooperation really worked. Part of the work was contracted out to Western Ship Repair in Lithuania and to Motorenwerke Bremerhaven in Germany, all supervised by Meyer Werft. For final outfitting as well as the installation of feeding, drinking water and ventilation systems, the ship returned to Papenburg. The conversion was sucessfully completed after approx. 11 months.
KLTT has been a Meyer Werft customer for many years. As early as in 1980, the shipyard delivered the world's biggest livestock carrier, the Al Shuwaikh, to Kuwait.
