The electric capstan is a vertically-mounted revolving device used to apply force to lines and cables (though usually not chains). Power is provided by an electric motor. There are many different sizes of electric capstan. Capstans are usually located on the forecastle or poop deck for use during vessel maneuvers.
Electric capstans are used during berthing and undocking maneuvers to direct and manipulate the ship's lines. Smaller electric capstans are commonly used in boats for line handling.
The two essential parts of an electric capstan are the drum (the rolling element) where lines and cables are wound, and the electric motor. The motor is often mounted below deck, only the drum remaining visible. This arrangement frees the deck of unnecessary clutter.
The size and nature of the lines and cables to be handled will determine the dimensions and the head size. The electric motor will be chosen as a function of rotation speed, location, output power and through- or above-deck mounting.
