The ship's Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEDB) supplies compressed air from a tank for a specified length of time.
The ship's EEDB is for emergencies only. It allows the user to breathe when the ambient air is unbreathable.
The EEBD is designed such that an untrained person can use it. Generally, it consists of a tank of compressed air sufficient for 15-30 minutes of use (never less than 10 minutes) and a hood which covers the head. It has straps or a belt for hands-free use.
The apparatus should be comfortable to wear and easy to use. EEBDs are subject to SOLAS regulations and the Fire Safety Systems Code.
