A wetsuit protects the wearer from cold water and possible abrasions.
Wetsuits are made of neoprene, a synthetic rubber. Thermal protection derives from the rubber's thickness. In addition, the diver's body heat warms the thin layer of water trapped between the suit and the skin. While thicker neoprene affords greater warmth, it also hampers movement. Warmer drysuits and semi-drysuits are favored for especially cold water and/or long dives.
Choice will depend on dive environment and type of diving. A custom-made suit better fits the body's contours, limiting water exchange during the dive, thus increasing thermal comfort. Different thicknesses are suitable for varying conditions:
2-3 mm for warm water
4-5 mm for temperate water
5-6 mm for increased comfort in temperate zones
7-8 mm for cold water
Since wetsuit elements are sewn together, seam quality is important for warmth, as are cuff and neck seals. Zippers should be carefully checked for proper closure (especially on drysuits).
