Displacement yachts cannot plane. They feature characteristically large dimensions allowing optimum comfort as compared with planing hulls, more adapted for speed.
Unable to reach elevated speeds, these yachts are mostly used for comfortable coast- and high-seas cruising.
Hull dimension and shapes allow extensive fuel reservoirs and therefore an autonomy much superior to that of planing hulls. All exploration yachts are today displacement yachts.
Their hulls are made of steel; aluminum, a lighter material, is used for the superstructures so as to increase stability, by lowering the gravity center.
Some yards use composite materials. Displacement yachts being mostly designed for comfort, the cost excess related to these materials (all the more since they have a shorter lifespan) explains their infrequent use, despite the attractiveness that resin, for example, possesses.
