Diesel-electric propulsion is a mixed system combining diesel engines, electric motors and batteries. This arrangement provides power to turn drive shaft and propeller.

Applications

Diesel-electric propulsion can be used in all types of vessel: merchant ships, cruise ships, yachts, launches, etc. It can also power auxiliary engines, bow thrusters, air conditioning, windlasses, etc.

Technologies

Diesel-electric propulsion usually includes a generator to charge the batteries that provide electric power.
