There are two main types of inboard engines: diesel and gasoline. Diesels are more common and are better suited for marine propulsion, developing more torque than gasoline engines.
These engines are found primarily on medium-sized professional and commercial vessels, yachts and other recreational craft. Those for professional use are referred to as commercial marine engines on NauticExpo.
Diesel engines compress an air-fuel mixture (diesel, fuel oil or vegetable oil) to the point of ignition without the need for a spark. Modern inboards have a four-stroke combustion cycle. Two-stroke versions are ships motors.
Choice will depend on the engine's:
- Technology
- Consumption
- Weight
- Power
- Torque
A indirect injection, naturally-aspirated engine will be easier to repair because it is mostly mechanically controlled. Its fuel consumption is higher than a common rail, variable geometry turbo model or one with exhaust gas recirculation. Power and torque curves should be compared as a function of motor rotation speed, taking into account whether the hull type is fundamentally fast or slow.
