A deck crane is installed on an open deck. It is used to lift and move cargo and other materials.
Such equipment is used for moving cargo already on board or for loading and unloading cargo between the vessel and the dock.
The numerous crane types differ according to specific use. They include knuckleboom, general cargo, telescopic, articulated, rail-mounted and bulk cargo-handling models. They may be powered by internal combustion engines, electric motors or hydraulic systems.
Specific cargo-handling needs will determine the choice among the various sorts of crane. Lifting capability, dimensions and location on deck also must be taken in to account.
