A deck crane is a machine located on the open deck used for hoisting and moving cargo, provisions, materials or loads that are too heavy to be manipulated by hand.
Deck cranes are generally used either for moving cargo already on board or loading and unloading cargo between the vessel and the shore.
There are many different crane types, which differ according to specific use: knuckleboom, general cargo, telescopic, articulated, rail mounted, bulk-handling, etc. In general, they include a hoist, wires or chains and sheaves. They may be powered by internal combustion engines, electric motors or hydraulic systems.
Specific cargo-handling needs will determine the choice among the various sorts of crane. Lifting capability, dimensions and location on deck must be taken in to account.
