A cruising genoa is a large headsail suitable for any heading, from close-hauled to reaching or running. It is sturdy and durable.
The cruising, as opposed to the racing genoa, must be sturdy enough to stand up to heavy weather, especially since it is often used partly reefed on roller furling gear.
These sails are often cut from Dacron or polyester, sturdy, inexpensive fabrics. They can be cross- or triradial-cut, the latter being more expensive, but more aerodynamically efficient. Used for long passages and deliveries, cruising genoas are reinforced at all the key points.
Choice will depend on stay length, mast height above deck and the length of the sail's foot, from tack to clew. Some manufacturers have tables showing the proper dimensions for each production craft. If the vessel is not a one-off, indicate its make and model, as well as whether the sail will be bent to a stay, a hollow stay or use roller furling.
