A container stacking crane is a specialized yard gantry crane or bridge crane used within the port terminal.
The container stacking crane, also known as a "Transtainer" (trade name registered by PACECO), is a shore-to-shore crane for lifting, shifting, arranging, transporting and truck-loading containers within the container yard or port terminal.
The container stacking crane is bridge-shaped. Its steel frame can be mounted on rails or wheels, allowing movement through the container yard. It is also provided with a telescopic spreader to manipulate different container sizes. There is not necessarily a cabin for the operator, since the crane may be controlled from a panel on one of the legs of the structure or even on the top.
Criteria for choosing a container stacking crane include whether it is movable or fixed, its height and its lifting capacity.
