Your suggestions for improvement:
A compass is a navigational instrument which indicates magnetic north.
ApplicationsThese devices are an essential element of offshore navigational equipment. In coastal navigation, a bearing compass allows the sailor to determine relative position with respect to at least two simultaneous visible landmarks.equipment.
TechnologiesThere are two types of marine compass. In the first, the compass card revolves in reaction to the boat’s changing orientation with respect to the earth’s magnetic field. The second is the gyrocompass. The latter device is used primarily aboard merchant vessels. It uses a gyroscope to provide a stable indication of true rather than magnetic north. In contrast to those used ashore, marine compasses have no needle.
Recreational boaters use a compass filled with a viscous liquid designed to damp the effects of the boat’s motion. The compass card remains level thanks to a gimbaled mount. Electronic devices and metal elements aboard the vessel create deviation, preventing the compass from indicating the actual direction of magnetic north. This phenomenon requires correction.
Choice will depend on the type of boat, whether sail or power, or a high-speed outboard. Other factors include the type of sailing to be done, coastal or blue-water, as well as whether the compass will be mounted to the mast, built in, on a forked support or the helm. If cockpit space permits, choose a model that is large enough to read easily.
