A coastal tanker is a type of tanker especially dedicated to coastal service.
The term "coastal tanker" not only implies a kind of tanker, it also implies a certain size of tanker suitable only for coastal use. They are not designed for long distance shipping.
They may be dedicated to the transport of many different liquid cargoes namely chemicals, gasoline, water, molasses, liquid gas or petrochemicals.
Coastal tanker ships are designed as tankers, enclosing the liquid in tanks in order to be carried. The shape and construction materials of these tanks may vary depending on the type of liquid to be carried.
There are typically pumps inside the tanks in order to pump the liquid out. Depending in the type of cargo they may also have insulation of even integrated cooling or heating systems.
The navigational scope and zone are the primary factors to take into account. Many other factors such as the type and variety of liquids to be carried, the cargo capacity and the type of tanks should also be considered.
