The Tyee Spirit 14 Fishing rowboat originates from Campbell River, on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Every summer a large run of Chinook Salmon return to the river to spawn. Those fish that have matured to over 30 lbs are called “Tyee” salmon
About 1910 Ned Painter, a local boatbuilder, began turning out beautiful lapstrake cedar planked rowboats 14’ in length and 4’2” in beam. These became very popular with sport fishermen. Painter’s rowboats were renowned for the way they carried a load and comfortably handled the choppy tidal waters around Campbell River
Flotillas of rowboats still ply the river mouth, a guide at the oars and one or two sport fishermen holding their rods anticipating a strike..
The Tyee Spirit best suits those that require a fishing boat with a little more space and room for more gear. . A small outboard can be mounted on the transom.
These attractive boats are built to impeccable standards with a lapstrake style fiberglas hull, solid teak woodwork and bronze fittings. They will handle serious usage for generations. The Tyee Spirit 14 has recieved great acceptance in both North America and Europe as a traditional rowboat, slide seat sculling boat and/or sailing dinghy.
