The chain stopper is a fitting or mechanism designed to hold the anchor chain fast, preventing it from putting direct strain on the windlass. NauticExpo classifies the different types of stopper by vessel size: for boats, yachts or ships.
The chain stopper prevents the anchor chain from slipping whether underway, at anchor or when dropping or weighing anchor.
Among the different chain stoppers are the blade, claw, pawl and hinged bar types. All are mounted on deck. They block the chain in place and maintain tension.
