The Champlain is one of our largest tandems. It also has fullness for much of its length, giving it even greater volume than its dimensions suggest. Regulations for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness limit group size to nine, but with no more than four canoes. Therefore, at least one canoe must carry three people.
We designed the Minnesota 3 to carry three people, to be paddled by three, and hold gear for three. This hull is unique and has amazing performance. Even heavily loaded it travels faster with less effort than any tandem.

Imagine a boat so light that you can put it on your shoulder and stroll casually down a wooded trail, carry it to a hidden lake or stream, or paddle it with almost no effort. That was the idea behind the original "trapper" or "pack" canoes. CLC's 26-pound Sassafras 12™ carries on the tradition - but with modern building methods.
Though she can be carried, or paddled, by a child, she'll hold a 250-pound load. She tracks well, turns easily, and is stable enough for fishing. For maximum efficiency you'll want to paddle the Sassafras 12 with a double (kayak) paddle.
Like many traditional canoes, the Sassafras 16 is symmetrical, bow and stern. This allows a solo paddler to sit facing "backwards" on the forward seat for better trim. Her slightly rounded hull offers more speed and responsiveness than many of the plastic or 'glass boats you may have paddled. Her hull is slightly rockered - not for maneuvering in whitewater, but rather to reduce wetted surface area - making her almost effortless to paddle. She has a smooth or "well dampened" feel that is characteristic of good wooden canoes.

The Vagabond is only moderately wide but is full from bow to stern, giving good stability and volume for its size. Though only big enough for short trips, it holds plenty of gear for fishing and casual use.
The Vagabond is manageable and enjoyable for new paddlers, and its small size makes this canoe very easy to car-top and carry, and convenient to store.
The Vagabond also responds well when used with a kayak paddle for improved performance on calm water or better control in inclement weather. The Vagabond is lighter than any kayak of comparable length and when paddled this way, also easily outperforms a kayak of similar size.
A longer hull will haul more, track straighter, and easily outpace a canoe of this size, but a smaller boat has other appealing virtues. One obvious advantage is light weight; a small canoe is easy to portage and to lift onto your car. Also, a smaller boat takes less storage space. Quick turning is another advantage. The Vagabond delivers all of these virtues, yet has enough efficiency and capacity to be enjoyable in a variety of conditions.
