Cam cleats for sailboats can be used to hold fast sheets outside pulleys, traveller car lines, vangs, etc.
They can be used both by small sailing dinghies and large sailboats.
Cam cleats for sailboats are rigging units composed of two toothed, articulated, water-drop shaped cams facing one another. They rotate upon a vertical axis when a line goes through the cleat. The cams arrest the line via internal springs. The line is freed when pulled upwards, and the cams go automatically back into place.
The cams are usually made of rigid plastic, and sometimes of stainless steel or aluminum.
Some cleats are mounted upon circular bases outside a fairlead or a block (e.g. for a mainsail sheet) and can be used for tacking.
Such cleats are often equipped with metallic line guides to ease line access.
Cleats are characterized by maximum diameter (e.g. 10/12 mm) and maximum bearable stress.
Cam cleat size is proportionate to craft size.
