A cam cleat is used to immobilize lines of small or medium diameter.
Particularly useful for holding the relatively light lines of sailing dinghies, these devices are also practical on sailboats. For example, they often are used to make fast the mainsail sheet as it emerges from the block or to prevent the traveler car from moving laterally.
This device consists of two spring-loaded jaws which are closed when not in use. A metal guide keeps an uncleated line near the jaws. When the line is pulled between the ribbed jaws, they keep it from being pulled back out. The line can always be tightened by pulling on the free end, but will resist tension from the opposite direction.
These cleats are rarely big enough to handle line over 10 millimeters thick. For heavier line, a line clutch must be employed. They should be mounted such that the jaws are aligned with the axis of the line.
