The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A cable ship is designed for laying one or more cables on the seabed. If the working depth exceeds the length of a single cable, multiple cables must be joined together on board.
The basic functions these vessels are to lay cables on the sea bottom and repair broken or damaged cables.
The cable is embedded in the sea floor by a plow towed by the cable layer. During the joining of multiple lengths of cable, the vessel must be able to hold position. Thus, modern cable ships are equipped with azimuth thrusters, pods or variable pitch propellers.
Since the actual position of a seabed cable must match its charted position, precise propulsion and steering mechanisms are recommended. Other important criteria include the vessel's cable-carrying capacity, dimensions and range.
