Boat steering gear is a system controlling the direction of leisure craft.

Applications

Most of the devices presented here are hydraulic power steering systems designed for rigid or rigid inflatable powerboats and large sailboats.

Technologies

The wheel, or helm activates a hydraulic pump in a given direction. The pump sends fluid to one side or the other of the piston, turning the rudder or rudders in the desired direction. If the system is controlled by a joystick or an autopilot, the pump is hydro-electric.

The power of the pump and piston system will be proportional to the flow of water over the rudders, and is calculated based on the vessel's weight and maximum speed. Some systems are sold as complete units, others as individual parts.

How to choose

Calculate the power required by the vessel as a function of its weight, length, maximum speed. Some systems are intended for use with outboard motors, others with inboards. The number of rudders is another factor. All these characteristics will influence choice. For joystick or other remote control installation, verify that the voltage of the vessel's electrical system (12 or 24 V) matches that of the hydro-electric pump.
