HyDrive's impressive range of manual hydraulic outboard steering is ideal for most applications, however, power steering may be suitable for large horsepower boats that require small turn ratio's with little effort or for people who, for medical or employment reasons, require power assistance in turning the wheel. The system can be installed as a complete unit, or used to upgrade an existing HyDrive manual hydraulic unit that is in good condition. Power steering systems are available for dual stations, single or dual cylinders, catamaran steering without mechanical tie-bars and can include provision for an autopilot.

The new improved performance, and unique oil balanced design make these helm units the ultimate for yacht steering where feed-back to the wheel is required. The efficiency of the design means that even small loads can be sensed at the wheel, giving the “feel” of mechanical steering with all the safety and advantages of hydraulics.
As a result of years of intense research and development, HyDrive Hydraulic steering offers huge advantages for sailing boats :-
- Instant movement - No slack!
- Simple installation with hydraulic tubing that can be run literally anywhere on the boat - no more straight line cables, pulleys, or sheaves!
- Fully compatible with hydraulic autopilots
- Totally Manual - no power required
- Ease of fitting to wind-vanes
- Safety and reliability that only hydraulics can offer. (You trust hydraulics to stop you safely in your car)
- Cost savings on expensive quadrants (Overall costs on a complete hydraulic system will most likely work out considerably less that an equivalent cable system of equal quality and power)

When a direct link from the rudder to the pedestal via a rack and pinion system isn't possible, the best, most direct and strong mechanical steering system to go for is the Jefa transmission steering system. The transmission steering is based on the same principals as the rack and pinion system; the rotation of the wheel is transferred to a push pull movement via a gearbox and levers. The difference with the rack and pinion system is that the distance from the wheel to the rudder shaft can be much bigger and the routing more complex. Via torque tubes, universal joints, and bevel gearboxes, the rotating movement is transmitted to the reduction gearbox next to the rudder shaft. The reduction gearbox transfers the rotating movement into a push and pull movement on the tiller lever. As all rotating parts are running in roller bearings, and the system can be easily back driven by the rudder, the result is a steering system which can be far away from the rudder, but with the same precision and feel as a tiller steered boat.

Tides Marine manufactures a wide variety of rudder bearings, rudder sleeves, rudder tubes and rudder ports (with and without seals). This product line provides builders, engineers, naval architects and repair facilities with solutions to most any problem they may encounter.
Most of these Rudder Bearing products are precision-machined from UHMW-PE, an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. UHMW is extremely durable, abrasion resistant and does not absorb water. It's coefficient of friction (when water-lubricated) approximates that of Teflon in these bearing products.
Tides Marine rudder bearings carry American Bureau of Shipping and Lloyds Register Type Approval.

Production of upper and lower bearings for rudderstock (for steering wheel or tiller)
Aluminium or stainless steel selfaligning bearings with plastic sphere
Aluminium bearings with plastic sphere and rollers
Selfaligning aluminium bearings with rollers
Bronze lower traditional bushings with stuffing box

In line with Clements Marine's philosophy to supply an increasingly broad range of sterngear components, we have introduced the Strong Products/Tides Marine range of rudder bearings and rudder seals.

HYDRAULIC HELMS
The hydraulic helms are of the axial pistons type. The helm housing is in aluminium with bronze gears and cylinder block for greater durability and longer life. The P20, P30 and P42 models are supplied with a built-in non return and relief valve. For all the other models a non return valve shall be mounted separately. The hydraulic helms are supplied without any fitting. Complete kit of fittings are available separately, which shall be specified when placing the order. The codes and descriptions of the different kits can be found on the price list.

216FM “Front Mount” Cylinder
The HyDrive Model 216FM cylinder is designed to fit all brands of V4 and V6 Outboards*. It offers the advantage of rigid mounting directly in front of the motor. While it does require more well-space than the “Bullhorn” type cylinder, the hydraulic hoses remain stationary.
The marine brass cylinder is nickel coated and has special non-conductive and wear resistant rod-guides, offering maximum protection against electrolysis and other damage. It is capable of handling single or twin V4 and V6 outboards without torque feedback (single motors to 235HP or twin up to a total of 400HP- counter rotating). Combined with the Admiral series 101 helm, it offers the ultimate in boat handling for you and your family.

A very popular cylinder type for outboards is the HyDrive tube-mount or side-mount 210T (balanced) and 210TSE (unbalanced). It can handle the same horsepower as the powerful 210BH Bullhorn cylinder, but it is simpler and cheaper to install. The only restriction to fitting them is the side-clearance requirements in the engine well. Made of chromed brass, bronze and stainless steel, there are two versions available, - the 210T which is a balanced cylinder, and the unbalanced 210TSE which has slightly higher turns one way than the other. It's advantage is that it requires less clearance for installation. They can also be fitted directly to splashwell brackets to replace any cable steering. It's really that simple.

210BH “Bullhorn” Cylinder
There are several different ways to steer outboard motors. You need to consider the room available and the design of the boat’s engine well. The most popular of our outboard steering cylinders is our Model 210BH Bullhorn unit. This is the most powerful and durable cylinder of its type on the market. It is capable of handling single or multiple engine installations up to 1200HP combined*
What sets these HyDrive cylinders apart from the competition is the materials used to build them. While other brands use anodised or painted aluminum alloy cylinders, HyDrive uses only chromed brass, bronze and stainless steel - built for the toughest marine environment.
The 210BH cylinder mounts very simply to the tilt-tube of the outboard motor and fits neatly under the front of the motor cowling. It is compact in design and requires only a small amount of clearance (615mm). It requires considerably less space than some competitors “front mount” design cylinders.

|
Introducing the HyDrive Model 212T Sport cylinder which offers the power and reliability of hydraulic steering at prices which are more than competitive with many mechanical systems. This compact tube-mount cylinder is capable of handling up to twin 150HP engines (counter-rotating) or a single 235HP with comfort. It attaches directly to the outboard motor's tilt-tube just like the old push-pull cable steering! It also attaches to Stern-Drives in the same manner, and can be used on Sterndrive Power steering cylinders making dual stations very simple.
