The environmentally friendly HYBRID SOLUTION marks a new chapter in the history of pleasure boat propulsion systems. It not only assures zero emission and low speed manoeuvring in harbours, noiseless drive on inland waters and nature reserves, but also eliminates the need for separate generator units for other onboard equipment. The "zero emission" electric drive mode allows a speed of 5 knots using solely electric propulsion and switches to the combustion engine with an easy turn of the ignition key. The ingenious propulsion then gets "boosted" by the electric drive and enables quicker acceleration, lowering fuel consumption, improving response and dynamics. Significantly reduced maintenance costs and improved ease of service are further irrevocable arguments that STEYR MOTORS is introducing a serious technological novelty.

The many virtues and pleasures of electric propulsion are well known in river and canal boating circles. Electric motors are virtually noiseless, have no smelly fuel and produce no polluting emissions. In other words, these propulsion units are truly "green" and environmentally friendly. By making good use of modern developments in electric motor design, VETUS has constructed the ideal electric propulsion unit. This has the principal assets of: very low power consumption, continuously variable speed, low weight and compact dimensions.

OSSA Powerlite® propulsion motors are the result of over 14 years of research in advanced permanent magnet motor technology by our parent company, Glacier Bay, Inc.. They have been developed specifically for use in yacht propulsion and do not require the use of a transmission or other gear reduction. Furthermore, they are available in a wide power range (20 hp - 800 hp) which eliminates need to use multiple motors and controllers on a single shaft to obtain the high power required for larger vessels. The motors have a flat torque curve, developing the rated torque from startup to maximum RPM. With efficiencies reaching 98.9%, OSSA Powerlite motors are among the most energy efficient rotating machines in the world.
Of course, any brushless DC motor is only as good as the the electronic controller which powers it. We are one of the few motor manufacturers to also design and build our own motor controllers. Since 1999, Glacier Bay has developed advanced BLDC motor controllers for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Westinghouse, Northrop-Grumman, United Defense, Tecumseh Products and other high technology companies and governmental institutions. All OSSA Powerlite propulsion motor controllers use Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) to implement a space-vector commutation control strategy. Space-vector control represents the leading edge of motor control technology and has the advantage of maximizing motor torque and efficiency while minimizing acoustical noise.

The electric motorization is available for either 12 or 24-volt installations. The user may control the winch by means of two watertight switches in order to select the best speed depending on the load.
The winch can also be used manually at any time, thanks to a knob that disconnects the motor. This knob is placed on the lower part of the motorization under deck.
Electric motors are mounted horizontally.
