Hexcel manufactures a complete line of HexForceTM woven and non-crimp fabrics from carbon fiber. The range includes traditional fabrics (3K, 6K, 12K, 24K), flat-tow 12K and heatset-unit fabrics, plus non-crimp, multiaxial reinforcements.
Hexcel's carbon fabrics meet the specification requriements of BMS 9-8 as well as other major aerospace manufacturers' specifications for carbon fabric. These fabrics use fibers that are produced under stringently controlled conditions, extensive testing and documentation.
Our commercial carbon fabrics utilise many of the same carbon fibers that have been produced with less extensive testing and documentation. Standard Modulus carbon fiber, supplied to the commercial market, yields typical property values of 530KSI (GPA) for tensile strength and 34 MSI for tensile modulus. Higher performance carbon fabrics with increased tensile and modulus properties are available from Hexcel for special applications.

|
Multiaxials are made up of two or more layers of unidirectional fibers stitched together with a light polyester thread. We also offer multiaxials that are powder-bonded instead of stitched.
Multiaxials enable the user to process multiple layers of unidirectionals (the ultimate reinforcement form) in a single fabric form
|
|
|
OCV™ Unidirectional Fabrics provide excellent strength and stiffness along the fiber direction. They also provide the highest ratio of axial strength to weight. This combination of properties makes Unidirectional Fabrics ideal for demanding applications with a high aspect ratio (length to width ratio) such as wind blades, poles, and stringers. These fabrics are also useful in applications where a discrete area requires additional strength or stiffness. Wrapping of existing structural components, such as columns and beams, with Unidirectional Fabrics could also greatly increase the lifespan and performance of these critical load-bearing members. These fabrics are also commonly used in FRP pipe and fittings for increased strength.

HexPly® prepregs are specially formulated resin matrix systems, that are reinforced with man-made fibers such as carbon, glass and aramid. When cured at elevated temperatures, the themoset resin undergoes a chemical reaction that transforms the prepreg into a solid structural material that is highly durable, temperature resistant, exceptionally stiff and lightweight.
Initially developed for the aerospace industry, HexPly® prepregs are now used in a wide range of applications - from golf clubs to satellite arrays, and from wind turbine rotor blades to life-saving Formula 1 monocoques. Hexcel has its own in-house supply of carbon fiber and world class weaving facilities for the development of optimum reinforcement technologies to complement the prepreg resin formulations.
Prepregs are supplied to customers in roll form, to be stored frozen and defrosted before use. When cured at elevated temperatures and under pressure, prepregs form molded components that are extremely strong and stiff. A broad range of formulated resins are used to impregnate the woven and unidirectional reinforcements.
Epoxy resins provide the highest levels of toughness and good environmental resistance. Phenolic resins provide fire-resistance and bismaleimide resins provide high temperature resistance. Cyanate esters provide excellent dimensional stability and are used primarily for satellite applications.
