The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A boat compass is an instrument which indicates the angle between the vessel's longitudinal axis and magnetic north, in other words, the compass course. On NauticExpo, these devices are for use on leisure craft rather than merchant vessels.
All vessels may experience the need for a compass, even sailing dinghies, where they are used to determine the layline. The marine compass, an adaptation of instruments previously used on land, has been the mariner's guide at sea for centuries.
There are four types of compass for recreational sailing.
- The magnetic steering compass has a magnetized, graduated compass card, or rose floating in a liquid (e.g., white spirits). The lubber line indicates the course.
- The electronic steering compass, or gyrocompass, uses a powered gyroscope in a housing to send true course information to on-board electronic devices and displays, including the autopilot.
- The bearing compass is a small, hand-held device with a sight glass used to take fixes on sea- or landmarks. This information can be helpful when trying to update a vessel's position on the chart.
- A satellite compass uses GPS data to determine true course.
Both steering and bearing compasses are indispensable when cruising. Local regulations should be consulted. Compass size will vary with vessel size to ensure easy reading at a distance. A metal boat's steering compass must include magnets mounted to compensate for local deviation.
