A Bimini top is a sun shade made of fabric stretched over a framework, which may be folding or fixed.
This device protects both boat and users from strong sun in port or at anchor. It can be deployed while underway in light winds or at low speed only, because of the risk of being torn off.
A folding aluminum or stainless steel framework is fastened to deck, rail or rollbar supports and covered by an awning of PVC or Dralon. The articulated frame can be folded out of the way when not needed, in strong winds or at high speed. The awning is sometimes supported by fixed stanchions attached to the hull instead of a folding frame.
The vast majority of Bimini tops are custom made. Careful measurements are required to ensure proper fit. Fabric color should harmonize with other on-board elements. Fixed supports are heavier and do not fold, but are sturdier and more durable. Only the fabric need be changed from time to time.
