The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A beacon buoy is a floating signal device of varying shape and color indicating a channel, a swimming area, regatta mark or used for other purposes.
These buoys are put in place by national or local maritime agencies, yacht clubs, scientific research organizations, divers or fishers, among other groups.
Buoyancy is achieved via the inflation of PVC or vinyl models, or an air chamber in rigid versions, usually made of polyethylene. The largest buoys are made of metal. The light of an illuminated buoy may be steady or flash in a particular pattern. Some of these use solar panels for power.
International regulations prescribe specific shapes for buoys serving different purposes. These include conical, cylindrical and other models. Buoys can be anchored, chained to a mooring or drifting and ballasted.
International regulations impose strict shape and color requirements according to the buoy's use including channel marker, port entry or special indications. In calm waters, drifting buoys may be used for training or racing events.
