An awning is a fabric cover used to protect various parts of the boat from UV damage or inclement weather, or to shade and cool the cockpit.
These covers are primarily usedwhile the boat is at anchor or in port to protect sails, including mainsails and roller-furled foresails. They also provide shade for people in the cockpit or on deck, for example during port calls while cruising in extremely sunny regions. Some boat covers are designed to protect small craft when not in use.
Dralon® and Sunbrella®, anti-UV acrylic fabrics, are the primary materials used to manufacture such covers. Some are treated to render them waterproof or fire resistant. There is a wide range of color schemes to match different vessel decor and trim. Simple covers are often used to protect a lowered mainsail. Lazy-bags, those attached to the lazy-jacks, remain permanently in place, even while at sea. They have a zipper closure, and save time and effort when stowing gear after an outing.
In the case of a standard product, choice will depend primarily on size. Other factors include color and intended use. A custom model ensures perfect fit, but costs a little more.
