Antifouling paint is applied to the immersed part of the hull to retard the growth of marine organisms that increase drag.
ApplicationsAll vessels remaining in the water for extended periods should be painted with such a protective coating.
TechnologiesThere are various types of antifouling paint:
- Hard, contact leaching paints have a porous surface film which releases biocidal agents little-by-little.
- Sloughing paints wear slowly, leaving a biocidal layer always at the surface.
- Semi-sloughing paints are a compromise between the first two types.
- Paint without copper oxides.
- Teflon® or silicone paints.
The effects of antifouling paint only last for a few years; periodic re-painting is necessary.
Hard paints are recommended for hulls subject to prolonged or excessive wear including blue-water cruisers, fast vessels, boats moored in swift currents, among others. Sloughing paints maintain a smooth, hydrodynamic hull surface. Teflon® and silicone paints create an even smoother surface. However, they should be removed before application of a new coat.
Semi-sloughing varieties offer a good compromise between durability and performance. Copper oxide-free formulations should be used on alloy hulls. Cheap antifouling paints have low concentrations of biocidal agents and limited durability. Regulations in some areas proscribe use of paints containing copper compounds.
