An anemometer measures wind speed. It is often linked to a vane which indicates wind direction. NauticExpo offers a variety of different types including portable electronic units, those for ships, models with integrated thermometer and versions constituting one element of a weather station, among others.
These devices facilitate port maneuvers and the choice of sails as a function of wind strength, among other uses. They also are found on buoys and meteorological stations. Portable instruments are used by race organizers and dinghy sailors.
An anemometer usually consists of a vane with cups whose rotational speed varies with that of the wind. Wind speed is indicated on a readout. Other types include sonic and laser Doppler models.
The instrument is normally mounted at the highest point on the vessel, such as a ship's superstructure or a sailboat's masthead. It is connected to a digital or analog display. Anemometers indicate relative wind speed, though certain models linked to a GPS or log/speedometer can calculate real wind speed.
Vessel type will determine the necessary sophistication of the instrument. The wind vane anemometer offers the maximum amount of wind data. Choice of cup, ultrasound or another technology will depend on budget. With no moving parts, ultrasound models have a reputation for durability.
