The amps measure with a shunt in a positive circuit by a digital instrument is very rare and is non-existent in marine. It is due to the technical difficulty to use a +12V (or +24V) in reference to place of the zero/mass of the battery negative.

The shunt (a measurement resistor) can be inserted into the measurement point in a matter of seconds. The fine equipment wire that runs from the shunt to the indicator is easy to lay without taking up much space.
