Aluminum sailboats comprise sailing vessels whose hull (monohull or multihull) and deck are made of aluminum. Sailboats are referred to as "sailing yachts" on NauticExpo when their size is over 15 meters.
Aluminum is often used on travelling and long-cruise sailboats: it is light, resistant and requires little maintenance. The weight/size ratio becomes interesting on hulls over 9 or 10 meters.
The boats are assembled by welding aluminum plates together, and can feature hard chine or soft chine thanks to the material's flexibility.
Electrolysis, the chemical reaction that attacks aluminum in case of power leakage aboard of contact with steel boats, may occur.
A bipolar electrical circuit is therefore installed (the hull not being grounded), as well as hanging anodes that will be attacked instead of hull. Likewise, any stainless steel gear must be isolated from the deck and the hull.
Check that all anti-electrolysis precautions have been taken.
Consider the navigation program to determine the size of the craft and the type of equipment required (energy production, water production, autopilot, etc.).
