With a flat bottom and very shallow draft, the air boat relies on a deck-mounted propeller for propulsion. The V-bottom or stepped hull of some air boats yields increased stability in turns and better maneuverability.
Its shallow draft allows the air boat to reach areas inaccessible by boat or on foot, especially in marshes. Depending on size, it can be used for recreation (fishing, hunting, etc.), for wildlife survey (game preserves) or for search and rescue operations during flooding.
The motor sits on the vessel, and turns a vertical propeller which pushes air rearward, propelling the boat forward. Vanes situated just aft of the propeller direct the airflow, allowing the vessel to maneuver. The motor must be powerful enough to push the boat to planing speed.
Size and equipment will differ depending on use and needed carrying capacity.
